As part of Peter Bren’s $1.25 million donation to establish the Peter Bren Initiative for Real Estate Entrepreneurial Studies, Anderson is proud to roll out a new course for the 2012-2013 academic year, Advanced Cases in Entrepreneurial Real Estate. Intended as the capstone course in the school’s Real Estate certificate and taught by Professor Eric Sussman, the course will be built around complex, live cases written in cooperation with several of the nation’s preeminent real estate developers and investors.

The inaugural quarter will feature guest lectures by Rick Caruso of Caruso Affiliated, Sam Zell of Equity Group Investments, and the executive team at Shea Homes. Future iterations of the class will also feature cases and lectures by Barry Sternlicht of Starwood Hotels & Resorts and John Bucksbaum, former Chairman of General Growth Partners.

On February 23-24, four first-year MBA students represented UCLA-Anderson at the UNC Real Estate Challenge case competition in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Under the alias of “Tower Properties,” the team of Rob Banovac, Jon Grobe, Phil Semon, and Sean Sullivan brought home 2nd place out of a field of the nation’s leading real estate programs. This year’s case centered around 600 acres of developable land due south of the Disney resort and theme park in Orlando, Florida. The site faced several challenges including significant wetlands protection issues, a restrictive local development plan, and concerns of cannibalization from Disney’s existing resorts and attractions. The case required the team to structure a joint venture with Disney (the landowner) and create a “New Urban” development program to appeal to both resort-goers and local residents. The judges praised UCLA’s creative yet realistic plan which included a new outdoors concept store/park, a high-tech learning campus, and a mixed-use retail village. In the final round, UCLA beat out Duke’s Fuqua School of Business and Columbia Business School, while narrowly losing the final vote 6-4 to UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. This marks the third time in six years that Anderson has taken 2nd place at the UNC Real Estate Challenge.

What Makes this Event Special?
Last year, our event drew over 220 attendees for networking, refreshments and a lively panel discussion among some of Southern California’s most established and interesting real estate investors. The reason our event has succeeded while other conferences sometimes draw limited attendance include three main factors:

(1) Great Panel.
The panel discussion is unusually candid, as we track a core group of investors through the full real estate market cycle. This ”longitudinal study” aspect of our event is unique. We are told each year that our panel is one of the best, or the best, among all the California conferences.

(2) The Price is Right.
At only $20 per person ($15 with pre-registration), including food, beer and wine, there is no better value than our conference. We thank our key sponsors including the Ziman Center at the Anderson School, and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, for keeping the cost to a minimum.

(3) Excellent Networking.
Our event starts with a one-hour reception during which you will meet valuable contacts in a collegial atmosphere. At the reception and after the discussion, you can meet the panelists and other professionals and investors in our industry.

UCLA Anderson Executive Dining Room

We would like to invite you to the 2012 AREA Career Night to network with other industry professionals and to get to know the talented real estate students at UCLA Anderson. This year we have an exceptional class of real estate students and while many companies have not yet determined their hiring needs for the year, this event is a great opportunity to connect with AREA members and network with industry leaders. Career Night will include a networking reception, a keynote presentation by Guy Johnson, and roundtable discussions with students. As an added benefit, all companies in attendance will receive copies of the 2012 resume book containing the resumes of each UCLA Anderson Real Estate student. The fee to attend is $300 to assist AREA in paying for the expenses of the event. This will ensure that your company will be included in the event brochure, receive a resume book, and be guaranteed face time with students. You are also encouraged to bring collateral materials from your firm. Once your registration is processed, you will receive event details including directions, parking information, and a listing of companies that will be in attendance.
